Root canal or endodontic treatment is done when the pulp becomes infected, or become inflamed or when the pulp is exposed due to dental decay or trauma and fracture of the tooth. Untreated affected, infected and inflamed pulp tissue can cause pain and lead to dental abscess developing.
During root canal treatment the infected and inflamed tissue is removed inside the tooth and root. Specialized instrumentation is utilized to remove the affected pulp tissue and clean and disinfect the internal tooth and root canal system. Once the cleaning had been performed the root canal system is sealed with a rubber like material called gutta-percha.
The root canal treatment can be performed in a single visit or multiple visits, depending on each individual case.
After treatment the tooth can be restored with a filling or crown restoring the smile and function.
